PHOP History

Parkway House of Prayer was started in 1947 as a non-denominational Christian church. Rev. Robert Painter, who was primarily a tent meeting evangelist, led scores of people to the Lord in the Roanoke area and eventually formed multiple new churches out of these tent revivals. In 1947 he felt led to start the House of Prayer in SE Roanoke and become its full time pastor.

God used "Preacher Painter" in a great way throughout his life-time and ministry. He led the House of Prayer until 1992 when he retired.

In 1993, Rev. Steve Parker became the new pastor at the House of Prayer and the church grew from about 40 in attendance to about 200 by the year 2000. Pastor Steve also led the church to re-locate to Vinton and build a new facility. God used Pastor Steve in a great way to lead many new people to Christ and into the House of Prayer fellowship. Pastor Steve also was influential in officially adding "Parkway" to the name of the church.

Pastor Steve felt called to a new ministry in 2000 and Pastor Jeff Keaton became the Pastor in the fall of 2000.

Not long after Pastor Jeff arrived God gave Pastor Jeff the "Vision" we have operated under for the last 10 years. Pastor Jeff felt that God impressed upon his heart that over the 10 year span from 2000-2010 Parkway House of Prayer would see 1000 new disciples raised up, 100 people called into full-time ministry and 10 new churches planted as a result of our ministry.

This vision has been amazingly fulfilled. On a recent Sunday we had over 1,500 people in worship in all of our churches. We have sent scores of people into full-time ministry and we have planted four churches here in the US and 11 overseas. God is Faithful!

Scores of people have been and continue to be saved here at Parkway. To God Be the Glory!
